Below are some general rules and some warning signs for exposure to carbon monoxide:

You should fit the detectors, in every bedroom where it will wake everyone should it pick up the signs of CM. If you have multiple floors in the home, then, there should be one on each of the floors. Most certainly in every room where an open flue or solid fuel burning appliance is located. Do not install detectors directly above or adjacent to boilers , fires or cookers, as they could emit a small amount of CM when they start up. Instead place them about 150mm down from the ceiling, you can go higher, but don’t go lower, and keep them higher than any window or door that can be opened, keeping them between 1.8m and 4.5m away from a potential source like cookers etc. to stop false alarms and don’t place them in any very humid areas like a bathroom as this will probably cause a malfunction. Pentonville Plumbers know the warning signs.
If you need to clean the detectors you should use soapy water and not chemical cleaners to reduce damage.

In terms of your boiler the signs are:

The flame in your boiler should really look a certain way to indicate that it is functioning correctly and not producing any adverse gas like carbon monoxide. On inspection of the boiler flame through the view glass you should see the flame burning blue with a defined inner and outer core. If the boiler flame is flickering orange or yellow, then the burn is not correct and there is a problem. Hoxton Plumbers are Gas Safe.

When combustion starts to go wrong the flame will start to release soot, which will coat everything around the boiler, watch for this.

Personally, you should be aware of headaches, tiredness, dizziness and nausea. These are classic monoxide poisoning signs and if you feel these you must isolate the boiler and call a Gas Safe Engineer at once.
